This database searches not only for the name of the deceased, but for any name mentioned in the obituary which includes other family members.
"Bookletters" is great for email
newsletters, especially for the weekly newsletter entitled “Books on the Air” which lists the books featured on television and radio for the week. Sign-Up—it is free!
"Encyclopedia Judaica" is available
online and in hardcopy. This database offers a comprehensive, authoritative examination of diverse aspects of Jewish history, life, religion, and customs. This database is available remotely to Newton residents.
"Rosetta Stone" language learning
online database is no longer sold to public libraries. Instead the Library provides access to two other databases: "Mango Languages" and "Tell Me More." Both databases are available remotely to Newton residents. In the Library patrons may reserve time on the language lab pcs in the AV area on the third floor to use both databases.

Blood Drives at the library
Second Wednesday of the month 10:00 am - 3:00 pm and last Wednesday of the month 1:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Four Express Lane workstations
at the Main Circulation desk, in the Children's Room, and in the AV area on the third floor allow patrons to check out their own materials, renew books, and pay their fines with a credit card.

Library has a Special Services Dept.
Special Services librarians visit nursing homes and elderly housing facilities and provide book talks. The library delivers books to the homebound, has an extensive large print collection, and offers equipment for the visually and hearing impaired.

New bike racks have been installed
In the front of the library is a "book" bike rack and there are a few new bike racks on the side of the building near the entrance over the bridge
Newton Free Library is one of the best
Hennen's American Public Library Ratings (2010) has ranked Newton Free Library in the top ten in the country compared to communities of the same size. The ratings are based on 15 factors including circulation, staffing materials, reference service, and visits to the library.

Staff members pull more than 600 items from our collection every day to fill patron requests.
The library has its own TV show
The Library show is on NewTV's Red Channel. It is called Books and Beyond and airs daily at 5 p.m.
The library offered 1,238 programs
for children in FY11 and over 27,000 children attended them.
The library offers computer classes
each month including Basic PC Knowledge and Skills and Learning to Search the Internet.
The library subscribes to over 600
print serial subscriptions and 27 electronic serial subscriptions
The library's Detention Basin Restoration
project will bring the basin back to the original intent. The vegetation and sediment are being removed to improve the flow of Coleman
Brook and prevent flooding in the parking lot. After the removal of the vegetation, an erosion blanket with grass seed will be placed in the basin. The
flood storage capacity will be restored to the basin.
The library's logo
reflects both our roots in print materials and our goal to further develop our digital resources as we continue to offer patrons an ever-widening range of in-person and web-based library services.

We have 24 art shows each year
Over 100 artists apply for the 24 art shows in the library each year.
We have a Special Collections Room
with materials on Newton and Massachusetts history.
We have a Young Adult Art Gallery
on the second floor of the library. The current exhibit shows work from Newton North High School students.
We now have "Open Reserves"
which will eliminate the need for patrons to wait in line to pick up their reserved materials. Reserves will be shelved alphabetically by patron's last name with books and audiovisual materials in the first floor atrium. After items are picked up patrons can use the Express Lane self-check to check them out, or ask the staff who will be happy to help.
We offer streaming music
Try our music databases "Music Online" and "Naxos Music Library," to listen to classical, jazz, blues, folk, world music and more.
